الأزمة: لماذا استهلاكك اليومي للمياه أكبر مما نظن

When we think of water, we often picture a tap, a glass, or a shower. But the reality of our water consumption is far more complex and staggering. While direct domestic use accounts for only about 10% of global freshwater withdrawals, the vast majority is hidden in the products we buy and the food we eat every day.

This hidden consumption, known as the water footprint, reveals a startling truth: the average person’s water footprint is about 3,800 liters per day. This number isn’t just a curiosity; it’s a wake-up call. It shows that our lifestyle choices, from the coffee we drink (140 liters per cup) to the clothes we wear (a single pair of jeans can take over 8,000 liters to produce), have a massive, unseen impact on global water resources.

As a result, the world is heading towards a crisis. Experts project a 40% global freshwater shortfall by 2030, driven by population growth, economic development, and climate change. This impending deficit makes the work of legal experts and policymakers more critical than ever, as they are tasked with creating frameworks to manage this vital, shared resource.
